Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association, based on 976 Art Gallery received a grant from US State Department to implement a project titled “Promoting Democracy Through Art”. Within the framework of the project “Art & Democracy” – open discussion was organized, where artists, art critics, representatives of media and civic organizations and others were invited. Artworks of several artists, who often raise the issue of democracy, were presented. The main issue of the discussion was ever increasing corruption, populism and inequality in the country associated with economic growth and how these changes reflect artworks of Mongolian artists. Upcoming mining boom is seeing by many Mongolians as a thread to the democracy, because of it many artists bring the theme of environment.
For this project 7 talented Mongolian young artists, namely B.Nandin-Erdene, B.Orkhontuul, A.Bayarmagnai, D.Naidandorj, E.Lkhagvadorj, D.Uuriintuya, were selected through the competition. Artists will be working for 4 months and promote the values and principles of democracy through their artworks, to be exhibited in May 2013.
